Honoring Dedication and Bravery: Marco Island Senior Squadron Celebrates Its Heroes

Marco Island, FL - On January 22, 2024, the Marco Island Senior Squadron, Civil Air Patrol (CAP), Group 5, Squadron FL 376, paid tribute to its members' exceptional service and dedication to duty. This ceremony not only celebrated individual achievements but also underscored the squadron's vital role in serving the communities of Marco Island and Naples in Southwestern Florida.

Florida Wing Group 5 Commander Major Peter Leckband and in-coming Commander Captain David Bynum as well as many spouses and relatives of our volunteer members were in attendance.

A Squadron with a Mission

Since its inception, the Marco Island Senior Squadron has been at the forefront of emergency services, aerospace education, and cadet programs. From conducting search and rescue operations to engaging in disaster relief efforts, the Squadron’s 46-member commitment to public service is unwavering. Operating from the Marco Island Executive Airport, the Squadron has been instrumental in numerous life-saving missions and is known for its significant contributions during natural disasters, such as Hurricanes Irma and Ian.

Celebrating Outstanding Contributions

The awards ceremony was a proud moment for members as they were recognized for their selfless dedication. Two members were recognized for 15 years of dedicated service, with a RED Service Ribbon Award, a testament to their long-standing commitment to Civil Air Patrol and the local community.

Highlighting their role in disaster response, four members were honored with the Commander's Commendation (featuring a Silver Star for saving a life) and the Disaster Relief Ribbon with a "V" device for service during a Presidential declared disaster. In this case it was presented for directly conducting aerial reconnaissance of disaster areas hit by Hurricane Ian. Critical images were provided to FEMA for their follow-on response. This recognition speaks volumes about the vital role Marco Island Civil Air Patrol plays in times of crisis.

For their meticulous efforts maintaining our aircraft in a mission ready status, six members were awarded the Achievement Award for their exceptional work maintaining our assigned aircraft during an annual US Air Force Inspection. The Squadron received a rating of 100% compliance from the US Air Force.

The 2023 Squadron Member of the Year Award recognizes a single member’s extraordinary contribution to our squadron, aircraft and facility during the entire year. This year the award went to our Aircraft Maintenance Officer for his selfless dedication to ensure our aircraft’s 100% mission readiness.

Further, the ceremony concluded with the presentation of eight more awards for Homeland Security, Leadership and for completing various Civil Air Patrol education courses along with a well-earned rank advancement to 1st Lieutenant for our dedicated Personnel Officer

A Bright Future Ahead

These awards symbolize more than just individual achievements; they represent the spirit of teamwork, dedication, and the unwavering commitment to serving the community that defines the Marco Island Senior Squadron. As they continue their noble work in aerospace education, emergency services, and cadet programs, the squadron is proud of its distinct accomplishments and continuous support for the community.
