Civil Air Patrol Members Prepare for 2024 Hurricane Season

Marco Island Fla. Members of the Marco Island Senior Squadron and Naples Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol recently conducted a combined search and rescue training exercise to prepare for the oncoming hurricane season. According to Lt. Col. Robert Nager, Commander of the Marco Squadron, “The donations from our Marco Island community allow us to expand training and remain a community emergency asset. This important training helps prepare squadron members to respond effectively in emergency situations in the community.
The Marco Island Senior Squadron command team conducted the training mission from the squadron hangar at Marco Executive Airport. The scenario involved a simulated report of a downed aircraft near the airport. A ground team from Naples Composite Squadron deployed from the hangar to locate the practice distress beacon. Squadrons often work in unison in real-world missions.
Using radio direction finding equipment, the team pinpointed the training distress signal from the simulated downed aircraft. The members navigated the terrain and demonstrated teamwork as they honed their search and rescue skills.
As the signal grew stronger, the team made their way to the survivor location. The team promptly secured the area, assessed the survivor, provided aid and arranged for the survivor transport to complete the training exercise.
In reviewing the mission, Lt. Col. Nager observed, "Our members are an all-volunteer group staffed by Marco Islanders and surrounding areas. We welcome adult volunteers, 21+, no age limit, no military experience is required. We have engaging non-pilot and pilot opportunities to match any interest or skill with the opportunity to learn new skills as well. Come for a visit."
The exercise was a success, allowing participants to sharpen skills, exemplify professionalism and preparedness. The importance of regular training ensures members are ready to serve Marco Island and surrounding communities in times of need.
